At the Highlands Center

In our classroom without walls you will discover Ponderosa pine covered mountains, deeply shaded riparian habitats, chaparral and woodland ecological communities, remarkable geologic formations, and amazing vistas, in addition to all manner of forest inhabitants. With educational programming, hiking trails, and gardens, our Prescott nature center has activities for all ages. Most of the grounds around the buildings are accessible by wheelchair. The ADA compliant Discovery Gardens loop has a paved surface and our three-quarter mile Stretch Pebble Loop Nature Trail (#443) has a gentle grade.

Visiting the Highlands Center with a Group

We love welcoming people to the Highlands Center! Our public trails are open for individuals, families, and small groups to enjoy during regular hours. However, organized groups of 10 or more people must make arrangements with us in advance. This total includes all participants, instructors, parents, guardians, and other accompanying adults.

This applies to homeschool and microschool groups, hiking and walking groups, clubs, adult groups, organized classes, educational groups, and other third-party organizations or gatherings, whether your visit is one-time or recurring.

Why? The Highlands Center operates on Prescott National Forest through a special use permit, and our Discovery Gardens, restrooms, play areas, amphitheater, learning spaces, parking areas, and other facilities are owned and maintained by our nonprofit. Organized group use must fit within our permit and program structure.

Planning a visit with 10 or more people? Please complete our Custom Program Request Form before coming to the Highlands Center. We’ll work with you to determine what arrangement makes sense for your group. Fees vary depending on group size, frequency, facility use, staff involvement, season, and impact on the site.

We want the Highlands Center to be accessible. If cost would prevent your group from participating, please don’t let that stop you from reaching out. Complete our Scholarship Request Form, and we’ll be happy to explore what may be possible.

Please note: Organized groups may not independently use the Highlands Center campus, facilities, or program areas without prior approval.
