The Highlands Center for Natural History’s teen internship program

The Highlands Center for Natural History’s teen internship program gives teens the opportunity to immerse themselves into the Central Highlands. Internships are completely field based and based in experiential-learning best practices. Teens develop leadership skills, strengthen their group management skills, practice public speaking, establish deep interpersonal bonds with each other and the younger generation- all whilst developing a sense of place with the natural world.

What to Expect:

Teen interns can expect to work 4 hours on Monday, Wednesday & Friday (12 hours weekly), for a minimum of 4 out of the 7 weeks of Summer Nature Camp. Interns will be placed in a Summer Nature Camp group each week, led by Staff Naturalists and Seasonal Nature Camp Leaders. Each camp group will have anywhere from 15-18 campers ranging from ages 3-13 years old. Days will be spent on Highlands Center trails, immersed in the natural world, learning, exploring and creating connections amongst each other.

Applicant Qualifications:

  • Must be 14-17 years old
  • Strong interest in education, youth development & the natural world
  • Comfortable interacting with members of the public, including children and adults
  • Regular weekly availability on Monday, Wednesday & Friday from 8:30 am-12:30 pm
  • Available to attend Orientation 
  • Available to participate in a minimum of 4 out of the 7 weeks of Summer Nature Camp, for a total of 48 hours, along with an additional week of orientation/training.
