The Once and Future Arctic
September 21 at 9:00 am - 12:00 pm$35
Date: Tuesday, September 21st, 9 am- 12 pm
As Arctic sea ice diminishes, there is increasing interest in development of shipping, fishing, tourism, and oil and gas extraction, as well as a growing realization that we need to protect ice resources and critical habitats for as long as possible. Through the interactive role playing simulation – Arctic SMARTIC: Strategic Management of Resources in Times of Change – participants engage in designing an Arctic marine management strategy for 2050. Based on resolution of a real territorial dispute between Norway and Russia, SMARTIC highlights the challenges and opportunities inherent in the rapidly changing high north. Played with thousands of participants ranging from 10th grade to law school and at the New York’s American Museum of Natural History to a cruise ship, SMARTIC shows how to be – in the words of one player – “better-equipped in the coming years to effectively work out solutions that can benefit all stakeholders.”
