SUMMARY:Summer Nature Camp: 30 Years of Wonder: Past\, Present\, Wild (Ages 6-13)
DESCRIPTION:This summer\, we’re celebrating 30 years of Nature Camp with a theme rooted in curiosity\, connection\, and nature discovery. Each week\, campers will explore the natural world through time. Looking at the past\, experiencing nature in the present\, and imagining the wild future we’re helping to protect. \nThrough hands-on exploration\, trail time\, nature-based lessons\, and environmental science\, campers will investigate water\, plants\, animals\, and ecosystems while building confidence\, friendships\, and a sense of belonging. Whether it’s their first summer at camp or one of many\, every camper becomes part of the story as we celebrate three decades of wonder and look ahead to many more.

SUMMARY:Peace in the Pines: a Guided Grief Support Journey
DESCRIPTION:We know—both intuitively and through science—that nature is profoundly healing. When we spend time in wild\, quiet places\, something inside us begins to soften\, settle\, and restore. To show up fully for our families\, our communities\, and ourselves\, we must first give ourselves space to reconnect—with our breath\, our grief\, and the natural world. \nThat’s why Peace in the Pines takes place in the heart of the Ponderosa pine forest of Prescott National Forest\, on the grounds of the Highlands Center for Natural History. Here\, you can hear the wind whispering through the tall pines\, feel your footsteps grounding into the earth\, and notice the presence of birds\, Abert’s squirrels\, and other wildlife. This setting is more than a backdrop—it’s an active participant in your healing. \nDetails: \nTo foster connection and continuity\, Peace in the Pines is a grief group that runs from May 28th to July 16th\, with the same participants throughout. All members join at the beginning and journey through the full program together. The group meets for 8 Thursdays in a supportive\, facilitated setting\, designed to encourage personal exploration and healing on the beautiful grounds of the Highlands Center. \nAfter we receive your registration\, you will receive an email questionnaire and a brief pre-screening conversation will be scheduled to ensure the group is a good fit for your current needs and support goals. \nThe total fee for the program is $20\, which includes all materials. For the benefit of all\, please be able to commit to attending all eight sessions.

SUMMARY:Natural History Book Club
DESCRIPTION:Sitting in the Highlands Center ramada while the wind rustles through the ponderosa pine needles and a robin chirps\, there is a moment of silent contemplation. Natural history is complicated – personal and universal at the same time. Our Natural History book club met beginning in 2021 and the discussions occasionally resulted in these special moments of quiet thoughtfulness.\nWe’re excited to continue to offer this free and open to the public program. Reading is something on many of our “to-do” lists\, but some of us need a little extra incentive\, like having a group that meets monthly to discuss. This group focuses on books related to natural history\, with some southwestern component\, written in the last decade or so. Books are selected by the group and then sold in the Benson Family Nature Store. We take our time reading – two months for each book. And we encourage personal connections\, as well as universal questioning\, when we come together for our meetings. People can jump in at any time!\nJoin the Natural History Book Club today!\nBook club meetings are the first Friday of each month from 1pm-2pm and meet in the beautiful outdoor setting of the Discovery Gardens Ramada\, weather depending.\n2026 Natural History Book Club Books and Dates:\nFebruary / March\nThe Age of Loneliness: Essays\, by Laura Marris\nApril / May\nThe Wild Dark: Finding the Night Sky in the Age of Light\, by Craig Childs\nJune / July\nThe Language of Trees: A Rewilding of Literature and Landscape\, by Katie Holten\nAugust / September\nThe Hidden Seasons: A Calendar of Nature’s Clues\, by Tristan Gooley\nOctober / November\nFlight Paths: How a Passionate and Quirky Group of Pioneering Scientists Solved the Mystery of Bird Migration\, by Rebecca Heisman
