SUMMARY:Peace in the Pines: a Guided Grief Support Journey
DESCRIPTION:Peace in the Pines: A Guided Grief Support Group\nFebruary 5 – March 26\, 2026 \nWe know—both intuitively and through science—that nature is profoundly healing. When we spend time in wild\, quiet places\, something inside us begins to soften\, settle\, and restore. To show up fully for our families\, our communities\, and ourselves\, we must first give ourselves space to reconnect—with our breath\, our grief\, and the natural world.\nThat’s why Peace in the Pines takes place in the heart of the Ponderosa pine forest of Prescott National Forest\, on the grounds of the Highlands Center for Natural History. Here\, you can hear the wind whispering through the tall pines\, feel your footsteps grounding into the earth\, and notice the presence of birds\, Abert’s squirrels\, and other wildlife. This setting is more than a backdrop—it’s an active participant in your healing.\nLogistics:\nTo foster connection and continuity\, Peace in the Pines is a grief group that begins February 5 and concludes March 26 with the same participants throughout. All members join at the beginning and journey through the full program together. The group meets weekly for eight weeks in a supportive\, facilitated setting\, with reflective materials provided for solo time in nature. These outdoor prompts are designed to encourage personal exploration and healing on the beautiful grounds of the Highlands Center. Grief education and open sharing with the group are key elements of every group meeting as well.\nAfter we receive your registration\, a brief pre-screening conversation will be scheduled to ensure the group is a good fit for your current needs and support goals.\nThe total fee for the full program is $20\, which helps offset the cost of the two books you’ll receive as part of the experience \nThis session has reached capacity and registration is closed. Join the waitlist to be notified if a spot opens. \nRegister for the waitlist

SUMMARY:The Age of Loneliness: An author talk and book signing
DESCRIPTION:Laura Marris is an essayist\, poet\, and translator. Her work has appeared in The Kenyon Review\, The Believer\, Harper’s\, The New York Times\, The Paris Review Daily\, The Yale Review\, Words Without Borders and elsewhere. She has received fellowships from MacDowell\, a Katharine Bakeless Fellowship from the Bread Loaf Writer’s Conference\, and a grant from the Robert B. Silvers Foundation. Her first book\, The Age of Loneliness\, was published by Graywolf 2024. She teaches creative writing at the University at Buffalo. \nIn this debut essay collection\, Laura Marris reframes environmental degradation by setting aside the conventional\, catastrophic framework of the Anthropocene in favor of that of the Eremocene\, the age of loneliness\, marked by the dramatic thinning of wildlife populations and by isolation between and among species. She asks: how do we add to archives of ecological memory? How can we notice and document what’s missing in the landscapes closest to us? \nFilled with equal parts alienation and wonder\, each essay immerses readers in a different strange landscape of the Eremocene. Among them are the Buffalo airport with its snowy owls and the purgatories of commuter flights\, layovers\, and long-distance relationships; a life-size model city built solely for self-driving cars; the coasts of New England and the ever-evolving relationship between humans and horseshoe crabs; and the Connecticut woods Marris revisits for the first time after her father’s death\, where she participates in the annual Christmas Bird Count and encounters presence and absence in turn. \nVivid\, keenly observed\, and driven by a lively and lyrical voice\, The Age of Loneliness is a moving examination of the dangers of loneliness\, the surprising histories of ecological loss\, and the ways that community science―which relies on the embodied evidence of “ground truth”―can help us recognize\, and maybe even recover\, what we’ve learned to live without.

SUMMARY:Community Nature Study Series: The Ancient Landscapes of Yavapai County
DESCRIPTION:Plain\, old\, simple rocks provide evidence for how our planet looked throughout the long span of Earth history. Yavapai County and Arizona’s Central Highlands hold a plethora of rocks that reveal our area was once the site of equatorial seas\, tropical river basins\, and ancient mountain ranges that are now long gone. How is it that these landscapes\, which disappeared hundreds of millions of years ago in some instances be resurrected? Through paleogeographic maps that are informed by the rocks exposed on the surface today. Take a trip back in time with geologist and author Wayne Ranney\, a former professor of geology at Yavapai College. \nReserve your spot as space is limited.\nPresenter Info:\nWayne Ranney\nWith a lifelong passion for Southwestern landscapes\, Wayne Ranney serves as a lecturer and geologic interpreter on various natural history expeditions and leads trips for Smithsonian Journeys and National Geographic across the globe. He is a former professor of geology at Yavapai College but there is nothing he enjoys more than teaching in an outdoor setting where landscapes can be observed and experienced firsthand. He has completed about 100 river trips in Grand Canyon. Wayne is also an award-winning author who has written for numerous magazines. However\, he is perhaps best known for his books\, Carving Grand Canyon\, Sedona Through Time and Ancient Landscapes of the Colorado Plateau. Wayne lives in Flagstaff with his wife Helen and enjoys road trips\, hiking\, river running\, photography\, and anything that allows him to get outside in the Arizona landscape.

SUMMARY:The Wild Dark: An author talk and book signing with Craig Childs
DESCRIPTION:A night sky is not an absence of light; it is the presence of the universe. In The Wild Dark\, master storyteller Craig Childs embarks on a quest to bike from the blinding lights of the Las Vegas Strip to one of the darkest spots in North America. Childs is a fearless explorer of both the natural world and the human imagination\, making him the perfect guide to help us rediscover the heavens and to ask: “What does it do to us to not see the night sky?” In a book that is at once an adventure story\, a field guide\, and a celebration of wonder\, Childs invites us to look up and to look inward\, eyes wide and sparkling with stars. \nCraig Childs has published more than a dozen books of adventure\, wilderness\, and science. He has won the Orion Book Award\, the Galen Rowell Art of Adventure Award\, the Spirit of the West Award\, and most recently the prestigious and coveted John Burroughs Medal for his body of work\, and three times he’s won the Sigurd F. Olson Nature Writing Award. He is a contributing editor at Adventure Journal Quarterly\, and his writing has appeared in The Atlantic\, Outside\, and The New York Times\, where he’s been called “a modern-day desert father.” He has a B.A. in Journalism from CU Boulder with a minor in Women’s Studies\, and an M.A. in Desert Studies from Prescott College in Arizona.
