The Highlands Center for Natural History’s Family Nature Festivals are fun for the whole family! From exploring bird migration to digging through owl pellets, these seasonally inspired events allow for hands-on exploration and discovery.

Halloween Happening

In this annual nature-themed Halloween celebration, families are invited to explore the natural wonder of the Highlands Center at night in a safe and exciting environment.

  • Have your face-painted!
  • Dissect Owl Pellets!
  • Roast marshmallows by the campfire!
  • Listen to stories by candlelight!
  • Meet live animals from the Heritage Park Zoo!

When: October 25, 2019 from 5 PM to 7 PM

Spring Spectacular

Come celebrate the 2019 opening of the James Family Discovery Garden with this fun family event! Engage with hands-on, educational stations that highlight the spring happenings at the Highlands: birds, blossoms, insects, reptiles, mammals, and more!  This kid-friendly festival kicks-off Discovery Garden events for 2019 with crafts and activities for all ages.

When: Saturday, April 13th at 9 AM to 12 PM

Migratory Bird Fest

Did you know migrating hummingbirds can fly hundreds of miles across deserts, mountains, and even oceans? You can learn all about hummingbirds and other migratory birds at our annual Migratory Bird Fest in the Discovery Gardens! Explore the behavior of ravens, create a bird mask, and stop at the Migration Stations!

Arthropalooza

Party down with all things creepy and crawly at this Highlands Center favorite. If you’ve ever wondered about the little big world of insects, this festival is for you! Become a member of the Dead Bug Society or maybe join the Cicada Club. Explore the wild world of insect mouthparts and take a closer look than ever before at these aliens on earth. Bring the whole family! From beetles to butterflies, it’s guaranteed to turn your world upside down.
