Outdoor Learning Activities

The Highlands Center for Natural History offers a wide range of outdoor learning activities and educational programs for people of all ages. From Naturalist Field walks to learning with our children in the outdoors, our programs have something for all outdoor enthusiasts.

Star Talks with John Mangimeli

 

Highlands Center Naturalist and night sky enthusiast, John Mangimeli, takes you on a journey through the fall stars in the special new series about stars, planets, and much more. All ages welcome!

Where: Acker Park (421 S Virginia St)

When:

September 15, 7:30 pm-8:30 pm
November 16, 6:15 pm-7:15 pm
December 15, 6:00 pm-7:00 pm

Ethnobotany Fest in the Discovery Gardens

 

Join us in the Discovery Gardens for a celebration of our native plants and the many ways that people use them!

  • Make your own ointments, poultices, and tinctures!
  • Taste cactus pads and juice from the cactus fruit!
  • Meet pioneer Mary Ramos and explore her basket of goodies!
  • Learn about medicinal plants that grow locally!
  • Go on a guided ethnobotanical plant walk!

This will be a fun educational day for all ages!

When: Saturday, October 21st | 9:00 am -12:30 pm

Where: Highlands Center for Natural History (1375 Walker Rd)

$2 for children under 13; $5 for adults; Free for Members

Halloween Happening

 

It’s that time of year again!  Join us for this year’s Halloween Happening–in the Discovery Gardens!!

  • Have your face-painted!
  • Dissect Owl Pellets!
  • Listen to a story by the campfire!
  • Go on a scavenger hunt!
  • Meet live animals from the Heritage Park Zoo!

In this nature-themed Halloween celebration, families are invited to explore the natural wonder of the Highlands Center at night in a safe and exciting environment.

When: Friday, October 27th | 5:00-7:00 PM

Where: Highlands Center for Natural History (1375 Walker Rd)

$2 for children under 13; $5 for adults; Free for Members
